Children's eye health

Children do not realise when they cannot see well. So even without symptoms, every baby should see an eye doctor in the first 6 months and have a yearly check afterwards.

Children cannot know they don't see well

A child is not aware of whether their eyes see well, so the responsibility falls on parents. Even without any symptoms, every child should have an eye doctor's check at certain ages.

Eye checks should be part of preventive care

Vision is not complete at birth; it keeps developing until about the age of 9–10. Problems found during this period are easier to treat. Like hearing screening, I believe regular eye examinations should be part of routine preventive health checks for all children.

A child who cannot see struggles to learn

A child who cannot learn because they cannot see may be seen as uninterested, lazy or hyperactive. Sometimes a child only notices poor vision at secondary school, which may be too late for treatment.

  • First examination: within the first 6 months after birth
  • After that: a yearly check
