Can children get cataracts, and why?

Cataract can also occur in babies and children; it may be present at birth or develop in the early years. Because it can cause lazy eye, early diagnosis matters; a cataract that affects vision is treated with surgery.

What causes cataract in children?

A cataract present at birth is called a congenital cataract. The main causes are:

  • Inherited (genetic) causes
  • Infections during pregnancy (e.g. rubella)
  • Metabolic diseases (e.g. galactosaemia)
  • Premature birth
  • Certain medicines taken during pregnancy

In some children no cause is found.

Signs

  • A white, cloudy pupil or a white reflection in photos
  • Squint (strabismus)

Mild cataracts may not be visible from outside but are found on examination. The most important risk is lazy eye.

Treatment and follow-up

A cataract that affects vision is treated with surgery. The eye doctor decides on the timing according to how dense the cataract is and whether one or both eyes are affected.

Because glaucoma can develop, especially after surgery, lifelong regular eye check-ups are needed.
