Should You Wear Glasses When Using a Computer?

In people with eye strain at a screen at work, the cause is often undetected long-sightedness or astigmatism. Suitable glasses, regular screen breaks and, if needed, artificial tears can ease the symptoms.

Hidden long-sightedness and astigmatism

Long hours at a computer can increase eye strain. Behind the symptoms there is often previously unnoticed long-sightedness or astigmatism. The eye muscles compensate for a while; with heavy screen use the symptoms appear.

For these people, wearing glasses at the computer can reduce strain. We often see this in employees who look at screens all day, such as bank staff.

Choosing lenses for computer glasses

  • Anti-reflective lenses: reduce reflections for more comfortable vision.
  • Blue-light filter lenses: may help some people with comfort, but the scientific evidence is limited.

Protecting your eyes at work

We blink less when looking at a screen, so dry-eye symptoms such as grittiness and burning can develop.

  • 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
  • Use artificial tear drops if needed.
  • Cut down screen time where possible and get enough sleep.
