Does Watching TV Damage Your Eyes?
Watching TV up close does not usually damage the eyes; more often, a child who cannot see well moves closer to the screen. A child who always watches TV up close should have an eye examination.
Why do children sit close to the TV?
Parents often blame television for poor eyesight. In fact it is usually the other way round: a child who cannot see well moves closer to the screen to see more clearly. The same applies to adults.
If your child always watches TV up close or squints, book an eye examination.
Large screens and viewing distance
As screens get bigger, viewing distance should be adjusted to the size of the room and the screen. Sitting too close to a large screen can cause eye strain and headaches.
Screen tips for families
Long periods of close screen use can increase eye strain and dryness, and in short-sighted children may be linked to myopia progression.
- 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, have them look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
- Limit children's tablet and computer time.
- Avoid screens late into the night.
- Blue-light filter glasses may help some people with comfort; the evidence is limited.
