Who is eyelid surgery for?
It is done at any age when a lid problem affects vision, and generally after 18 for cosmetic concerns. A full eye examination comes first for the right result.
Who is it for?
There is no fixed age limit. If a lid problem may affect vision, treatment is planned even in infancy or childhood; delay can cause a lazy eye. In some cases it can wait until primary school age. For cosmetic concerns, surgery is generally planned after 18.
Why does eyelid surgery matter?
What matters most is a full examination before surgery:
- Refractive error and eye pressure are measured, and dry eye is checked.
- Is the droop just age-related loose skin, or is the fat beneath involved?
- What looks like simple loose skin may come from the deep muscle that lifts the lid, and must be recognised.
- If a lowered brow is missed, the result can be hard to correct later.

Frequently asked questions
Which tests are done before surgery?
A comprehensive eye examination, including refractive error, eye pressure and dry eye.
Is a hooded lid always excess skin?
No. Fat, the lifting muscle or a lowered brow can also be the cause.
