What should you watch for before and after eyelid surgery?

Before surgery, blood pressure should be under control and any medicines or supplements that increase bleeding should be mentioned. Afterwards, ice for the first 48 hours, a raised pillow and keeping the area dry are advised.

What to watch for before surgery

  • Because surgery is under local anaesthesia, other health conditions usually do not stand in the way.
  • The eyelids have a rich blood supply, so blood pressure should be under control.
  • If you take blood thinners, a one-week pause before surgery is preferred where your doctor agrees.
  • Often missed: high-dose vitamin E or lots of herbal tea can also increase bleeding, so mention them.

What to watch for after surgery

  • Generous ice, especially in the first 48 hours, reduces bruising and swelling and eases pain.
  • Sleeping on a raised pillow is advised.
  • Keep the operated area dry for a while.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a best season for eyelid surgery?

Summer or winter makes no difference to success. The best time is when you can set aside about a week for yourself.
