Risks of eyelid surgery
The most common risks are bruising, swelling and temporary dry eye, which settle within weeks. Less common are incomplete eye closure and the lower lid being pulled down. Bleeding behind the eye is very rare but urgent.
Common and temporary
- Bruising and swelling
- Dry eye, stinging, watering
- Blurred vision in the first days
- Mild asymmetry
Less common
- Incomplete closure from removing too much skin
- Lower lid pulled down
- Thickened scar, small cysts
Urgent signs
Sudden severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling on one side or reduced vision: contact your surgeon straight away.

Does eyelid surgery cause dry eye?
Temporary dryness is common in the first weeks and settles with drops. Existing dry eye is assessed before surgery.
