Is there an age limit for eyelid surgery?
There is no strict age limit for eyelid treatment. Treatment needed for a medical problem can be done even in infancy, while cosmetic surgery is generally planned after 18.
Medical or cosmetic?
- Medical: age is not the deciding factor. In children with a congenital droop, treatment is advised straight away or before school age depending on severity; delay can lead to a lazy eye.
- Cosmetic: 18 is generally taken as the threshold. Most people who seek it are aged 30–50, and the cause is often inherited.
Often overlooked after 50
Lid sagging is common in later life even without a family tendency. Excess skin presses on the lid, causing heaviness, difficulty opening the eyes and a narrower field of vision. Many people do not notice it. Surgery is then not only cosmetic but a need for eye and visual health.
Common misconceptions
The ideas that you should wait until later in life, or that the eye will stay open after treatment, are not correct. The plan is set when the problem is noticed, according to how much it bothers you; patients range from 18 to 90.
