What causes dark circles under the eyes?
Dark circles have four common causes: increased pigment, thin skin showing the vessels beneath, the shadow of a hollow, and allergy. Treatment is chosen by cause.
Common causes
- Pigment: a brownish tone; sun and genetics play a role.
- Thin skin: vessels show through as purple-blue.
- Shadow: the tear trough hollow looks dark in light.
- Allergy and lack of sleep: rubbing and swelling darken the area.
What helps?
Sun protection and some skincare creams help with pigment and skin quality. If a hollow casts the shadow, filler or lower lid surgery with fat repositioning may be considered. Allergy is treated first.

Frequently asked questions
Are dark circles permanent?
It depends on the cause. Sleep- and allergy-related darkness improves; pigment and hollow-related darkness needs treatment.
