Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery aims to reduce dependence on glasses by correcting short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism in suitable eyes. The right technique is chosen after a detailed examination lasting about an hour.
What is laser eye surgery?
Excimer laser surgery aims to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism in people whose eyes are suitable. The main techniques are:
- Femtosecond laser LASIK: one of the most widely performed techniques, also known as 'bladeless laser'.
- SMILE: done through a small incision; it aims to better preserve the strength and nerves of the cornea.
- No-touch laser: a surface treatment applied to the cornea without touching the eye.
Pre-operative assessment
The examination, lasting about an hour, determines which technique suits your eyes:
- Your exact prescription is measured and confirmed with dilating drops.
- The thickness and structure of the cornea are examined.
- Tear film, eye pressure and the natural lens are assessed.
- The retina, including the peripheral retina, is checked.
Surgery day and recovery
The operation takes about 15 minutes and no hospital stay is needed. After LASIK and SMILE most people can return to daily life the next day; recovery after surface techniques may take a few days longer.
